2014 Inglenook “1882” Rubicon Estates Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Jeff Degner, CSW | Certified Sommelier, Court of Master Sommeliers

1882 is a perfect example of how you can make a great wine and honor the history of the winery with each bottle.  When Francis Ford Coppola purchased the Inglenook vineyard and name, he strived to not only maintain the quality of wine that the vineyard was known for, but to pay his respects to Gustave Niebaum, the original owner.  How can your Dad not love this wine?  It has rich American history behind it, dark fruit flavors that pair perfectly with grilled meats and was produced by the man who gave us the Godfather.  I call that a Father’s Day Hat Trick!

This is the third release of the 1882 and I can see where this wine is heading.  It would be easy for them to create a third label of their historic Rubicon wine, but in reality this is a wine that is standing on its own.  You will enjoy the concentration of dark fruits, but be won over by the subtle hints of floral and cocoa.  While the early presence of black currant and cigar box are normal for a Cabernet this bold, there is something refreshing about the woven scents of dried violets and dark chocolate that show up after a few minutes of swirling your glass.  I would suggest buying a case and opening a bottle every Father’s Day to see the changes that are awaiting this vintage.

75% Cabernet Sauvignon
15% Cab Franc
5% Merlot
5% Petit Verdot

History of the name 1882 and the winemaker Gustave Niebaum:

1882 was the first vintage produced by Gustave Niebaum on the estate that would become one of the most renowned wineries in the New World – Inglenook. In the same year, Niebaum dug a small cave in the foothills of the Mayacamas to experiment and better understand temperature ideals for barrel aging. Niebaum’s vision was legendary and his inquisitive search for perfection pioneered many initiatives of the modern-day Napa Valley. Today, Inglenook lies in the heart of the famous Rutherford Bench, offering an unparalleled wealth of quality fruit, richness and minerality from this unique terroir. 1882, made exclusively from estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, has been created to honor Gustave.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon 1882 has developed in a very pretty, expressive wine. Sweet herbs, mocha, licorice and leather give the 2014 much of its aromatic nuance and lifted personality. Medium in body and already quite giving, the 2014 will drink well pretty much right out of the gate.
