2016 Domaine Vrignaud Chablis
Jeff Degner, CSW | Certified Sommelier, Court of Master SommeliersFor 5 generations the Vrignaud family have been making some outstanding Chardonnay from Chablis and in 1955 they decided to plant grapes near the village of Fontenay-près-Chablis to continue this tradition. With Burgundy prices always on the rise it is nice to find steals under $30. 2016 was a difficult vintage with the late Spring frost and the hail storms in May. Most wineries reported their smallest crops in 20-30 years but the sectors that were not damaged by the weather turned out some amazing wines. The 2016 vintage is hitting the market and this just arrived to Texas about a week ago. I believe we should start seeing some ratings on this wine within the next 90 days.
This Chablis has that classic style of high acidity and flinty notes because of the 150 million year old Kimmeridgian soil. There are also notes of freshly picked daisies and kaffir lime. This would be lovely with fresh Dungeness Crab Cakes.
