2017 Greywacke Sauvignon BlancJeff Degner, CSW | Certified Sommelier, Court of Master Sommeliers
Greywacke has been a dream project for Kevin Judd since the early 90’s. He was the head winemaker for Cloudy Bay but after 25 years he knew he was ready to move on to his own project. Greywacke is the name of the gray, round stones that are located throughout New Zealand and are what inspired the name of Kevin’s winery. A lot of New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs can smell of grass and gooseberry. In fact, during a blind tasting these scents help us indicate a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. I don’t mind those strong flavors but I prefer them to be more subtle and integrated with more fruits. Because Kevin is one of the greatest Sauvignon Blanc winemakers in New Zealand, he was able to create a stellar wine with fresh grapefruit and guava flavors, along with those subtle grassy and gooseberry notes that are key indicators of the region. The crisp, light finish is very satisfying all year round.
Winemaker Notes from Kevin Judd
A delicious combination of ripe summer fruits and delicate floral perfume-citrus blossom and elderflower entwined with nectarines and white peaches, mandarin and cantaloupe with a twist of lemon. Intensely flavored, succulent and crisp with a delicate herbal infusion – quintessential Marlborough.

Wondering what these wine terms mean?Learn More
A wallflower when compared to other, more aggressively aromatic Kiwi Sauvignon Blancs, this wine offers hints of citrus, stone fruit, flowers and grass on the nose. The palate is of most interest here: It’s linear and chalky yet slippery in feel, with a fair lick of acidity that’s just barely balanced by fruit and florals.
Forget flamboyant Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc; this restrained example is a pure and elegant expression sourced from both the Wairau Valley and an elevated site in the upper Awatere. It offers delicate aromas of elderflower, nettles, chamomile and citrus. Light to medium in body, a short period on lees has brought a textural element to the mid-palate, before the fresh but balanced acidity provides a flourish on the finish.
