2017 Terlan Lagrein Rosé

Jeff Degner, CSW | Certified Sommelier, Court of Master Sommeliers

Alto Adige is a region that is nestled in the northern part of Italy just under Austria.  This area of Italy is known for high quality Pinot Grigio but it also has a cool red varietal called Lagrein that is amazing.  Lagrein has been around since 1500 AD but a majority of the plantings are in Alto Adige.  It never really caught the attention of winemakers outside of the Alto Adige region but those wineries that do produce it make an exciting and diverse wine.  Generally, a Lagrein wine can be very tannic and have a high acidity which is ideal for cellaring and drinking many years after its release.  There are a few wineries like Terlan that produce a Rosé from the Lagrein grape that are fun for Somms to play with.  The 2017 has great dark red fruits like bing cherry and ripe strawberries but also a lot of weight and body that you don’t get from Provence Rosés.  The  crisp acidity makes this more of a food pairing style that will be a great companion for salmon.

100% – Lagrein
